  • Herbalism is the magic and science of healing the body with plants. Since time immemorial, humans have been in relationship to the living world and the dynamic living phytochemistry of the plants throughout the seasons. Being a part of ecology, our bodies evolved to be in sensory and digestive communication with plants and their chemical languages. In the plurality of culture, many different methods have been used to understand the mechanisms of how plants heal us and the role plants play in broader medical systems.

I practice a lineage of herbalism called Western Herbal Medicine. For over 2000 years, this herbal energetic system articulated by early Greeks was practised widely across Europe. Existing medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, had already been in practice for millennia and inspired much of the Greeks medical knowledge. The invention of the printing press, botanical gardens and the Latin naming system for the natural world codified herbal plants, uses, and dangers in medieval history.

During the rise of the modern medicine, many of the principals and practices of herbal medicine were outlawed and criminalized to make way for the pharmaceutical, military medicine and hospital industries we see today. However, small threads of continuity managed to survive through herbal texts and the practices of common people in their cultures and relationships to their land bases.

Throughout early colonization of Turtle Island, now called North America, some settlers versed in the practice of Herbal Medicine came into contact with Indigenous Nations and Knowledge Keepers amongst them. Many critical medicines entered into the Western practice into the Eclectic and Thomsponian schools, articulated through the lens of the colonists. The Nations and those who shared their knowledge were rarely credited. The influence of these Herbalists was brief, though the inclusion of medicines endemic to Turtle Island are pervasive in herbals on this continent. In the early 1900’s, herbal medicine was once again criminalized to enable the exploitation of plants by the growing pharmaceutical industry, and Herbalism went underground once again.

During the 1960’s, Herbalism sustained a revival and we see early modern texts being printed and distributed throughout counterculture. Folk medicine took serious root. In the subsequent decades, those interested in the contemporary application of ancient techniques have wrestled with establishing professional standards, governing bodies, ethical harvesting practices, standardized education, access to herbs through farming, distribution and marketing, and navigating ongoing efforts from the pharmaceutical industry to crush our access to our ancient medicines.

Currently in Canada, Bill C-368 is the most recent attempt to threaten herbalists, distributors and producers of herbal medicine. During the COVID-19 lock down the Alternative Wellness Industry exploded as people turned to herbs and supplements to safeguard their health, and the Pharmaceutical Industry took notice. With effective lobbying, Bill C-368 was introduced to place extraordinary constraints on manufacturing and distribution of herbal products, once again endangering the herbal industry through extreme costs and penalties.

The contemporary landscape of herbalism is threatened and requires such tenacity and dedication from herbal practitioners. Gripping onto our birthright, we are dedicated to pulling the threads of time together to help our patients access the healing medicine of the living world. Reliant on soil health, farmers and growers, intact ecosysems, Indigenous Land Stewardship, mentors and guides, every Herbalist is a gift and a promise that, we do belong to this earth, and we must claim that inherent right and responsibility to our lives, diverse communities and the sacred lands that hold us.

  • I can’t actually tell you why to choose herbalism. I will tell you what I consider my role and responsibility as a Herbalist.

My herbal clients are often those who have been deeply disenfranchised and marginalized by the medical system, are living with intense chronic illnesses and side effects from pharmaceuticals, and are looking for medicine that considers the wholeness of their bodies and experiences.

As a Herbalist it is my obligation to consider the whole of you in your medical experience. Given the inherent interconnection of our nervous, immune, digestive, hormonal, structural and elimination systems, I strive to leave no stone unturned in my consideration of your case. I am focused on addressing the drivers of dis-ease in your body, easing symptoms, working alongside your doctors and prescriptions, and supporting your daily life to orient you towards healing.

Using herbs, food and supplements to address deficiencies, rebalance systems, provide nutrition and address acute healing, herbs are often gentle on the body and profoundly impactful on our resilience and sense of ease in our lives. Herbs are incredible tools for recovery and illness prevention, and can help clients address gaps in care from the Western Medical system.

  • In a herbal consultation, we will meet to discuss your health and build a herbal plan to support you. As your Herbalist, I may ask you about your medical and family history, onset of disease and progression and desired outcomes. If relevant, I may ask to see test results or blood work to better understand your health picture.

Your treatment plan will be developed to be the most simple and cost effective access to herbs. I can prescribe custom teas, tinctures, creams and salves through Pacific Rim College, bulk herbs through the Apothecary in Ingelwood, high quality supplements through FullScript, and am working hard to establish a clinical dispensary in Calgary/Mohkinstsis on Treaty 7 territory. Stay tuned for updates in 2026.

    ———

As a general practitioner, I am able to work with people in all stages of life, from childhood to senior years. My practice is deeply trauma informed, meaning I have considered the way medical trauma and (lack of) consent models in the Western Medical system have disempowered us since birth in our relationship to health and our own bodies. It has considered and acknowledges the impact of the history and persistence of medical violence on Black, Indigenous and Trans communities. I am here to believe you, seek to understand you, and work with your capacity to meet you where you are at.

As a member of the Alberta Herbalist Association, I commit to continue my learning, deepen my knowledge, and adhere to the Code of Ethics of my professional body.

As a client, you have a right to understand your treatment plan and consent to the cost and duration of our work together. You have the right to access an accessible practice that has considered your discrimination, is designed for dignity, and is open to accountable growth and generative conflict.

  • Herbs and supplements are not included in the cost of a herbal consultation.

I prescribe custom teas, tinctures, creams and salves through Pacific Rim College, bulk herbs through the Apothecary in Ingelwood, high quality supplements through FullScript, and am working hard to establish a clinical dispensary in Calgary/Mohkinstsis on Treaty 7 territory. Stay tuned for updates in 2026.

  • The duration of a herbal treatment plan depends on the severity of the illness and the commitment to taking the herbs from a client.

For acute illnesses, injuries and simple complaints, often a herbal treatment plan will be daily herbs for 1-2 weeks.

Longer, chronic, deep and stuck illnesses often need much longer to meaningfully shift. Please expect to work with herbs over many months. Different from the heroic medicines of the pharmaceutical industry, herbs work to balance systems and make supportive shifts over time to increase resilience and reorient the body towards health. Often, overcoming illness while also facing the challenges of lifestyle and nutritional issues can be like two steps forwards one step back. Herbs will walk with you in these shifts, and the changes can be profound, if you allow the plants to actually work in their own way.

  • For acute complaints, no need for follow ups if your condition resolves.

In addressing mental and emotional health, you may need to follow up in a matter of weeks to adjust your forumla and track progress.

Complicated and chronic complaints may take longer to resolve. You may be asked to take herbs for a period of time (1-3 months) before a follow up to allow the medicine to begin to make the significant changes we are looking to see.

  • Due to unresolved issues with licensing of Registered Herbalists in Canada, you are unable to use your Health Insurance plan to access Herbal Medicine.

While this in some ways safeguards against intense regulations around herbs and preserves the integrity of traditional practices, I acknowledge that the cost of privatized alternative medicine can be an incredible burden on clients. This is especially true for those suffering from financial hardship so common in long-term illness and disability.

If you are a client on the margins*, please book in for a sliding scale appointment, as I seek to be your accomplice in healing and wellness.

  • There are some circumstances where I might decide not to take on a client or to stop a session.

These are situations when I believe that my client’s or my own physical or emotional safety is endangered. In these instances I may end a consultation and the client will not be refunded.

Please be conscious of oversharing triggering material related to personal trauma or traumatic events. While I seek to hold a trauma-informed space, I am not a counsellor or therapist and may not have the skills or willingness to hold explicit details of trauma with you.

While discussing traumatic events such as death / assault / self-harm / sex / domestic abuse / etc can be exceedingly relevant to the purpose of your appointment, I will be more focused on the impact of these events then the explicit details. I am not trained to engage these subject matters therapeutically, and offering counselling to unpack these events is outside of my scope of practice as a Registered Herbalist.

I ask that clients maintain communication with me through professional channels, and always email me with questions or ideas.
